Presentation: Origins of the Tahoe Sierra Landscape
Various Locations
Squaw Valley Institute Presents: Origins of the Tahoe Sierra Landscape. July 24-26th at various locations. Go to www.squawvalleyinstitute.org for more information. Frank DeCourten, Professor of Earth Sciences at Sierra College, will lead another fantastic weekend of lectures and hikes focused on geology of the Tahoe region. This program will be a week-end field exploration of the geology of the Tahoe basin region geared to provide a general audience with an appreciation for, and understanding of, the evolution of the northern Sierra Nevada landscape. Two week-end hikes are planned, each preceded by an evening lecture that will address the geological features to be explored on the hikes. The illustrated lectures will stress the origin of the unique rock units and prominent landforms in the northern Sierra.
The hikes will target localities and areas of geologic significance, will be planned and organized to accommodate novice hikers, and will stress the relationship between geologic processes and natural features of the terrain. Included will be an overview of the modern geologic setting and its implications for regional seismicity, slope stability, climate change, water resources, forest management, and other impacts on local communities and residents.
