Bike in May on Emigrant Trail near Truckee

One of the Tahoe-Truckee area's favorite mountain bike rides is along the Emigrant Trail. It is also one of the first trails in the area to melt out. By mid-May it is usually in tip-top condition, although rain can wash out a few spots making the ride rocky and difficult in places.

Before Anglos came on the scene, water levels in Lake Tahoe were much lower. The lake level couldn't exceed, by more than a few inches, the lake's natural rim at 6,223 feet above sea level, even in wet years. Low water levels were determined by various drought conditions.
