Fall Fun Outdoors

Their magic continues year 'round. And right now there is much to see before the clouds of winter invade.

Tree Carvings
The carvings at Spooner Summit (7,100') on highway 50 to Carson City were put there by Basque sheepherders at the turn of the 20th century. The art, on the white trunks of aspens, is an early example of graffiti. Look high on the trees; time has passed!

Kokonee Salmon
During October and November, 20,000-50,000 salmon spawn in Taylor Creek at the US Forest Service Station--Camp Richardson, near South Lake Tahoe. Visitors may descend beneath the stream to the Profile Chamber and view the underwater activities.

Truckee
Visit the downtown where past and present are blended and the air is warm during the day, cool at night.

Trout
Fly-fishing always involves more than casting a fly and hoping. Most fly-anglers are wilderness aesthetics seeking peace and quiet. This time of year there is autumn scenery and few people, and trout are more active. The fish seem to move around a lot in search of food as colder weather approaches.

Countryside
Cooler temperatures and snapping twigs also enhance both cross-country running and mountain biking. The Flume Trails above Marlette Lake on the Nevada side of the basin offer a sweeping view of the Sierra crest, off to the west.

Cool Granite
Some of the finest rock climbing in the world is minutes away from Lake Tahoe itself. There are traditional granite cracks, bolted lava sport climbs, short, easy top-ropes, and long beautiful walls with easy access. Fall is a class-five time for climbing in the Sierra.

For hikers, the 14-mile high country route along the Pacific Crest Trail between Sugar Bowl and Palisades Tahoe will provide a dazzling variety of vistas.

For campers, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, which oversees campgrounds and trails around the Tahoe Basin, keeps many of the facilities and sites open year-round.

Fall fun in the Tahoe Region out-of-doors is there for your taking.
