Nordic XC Trails at Sugar Pine Opened for Use

Antonucci gave a short overview of the many things accomplished in 1960, at Sugar Pine, for XC competition. Then the band of colorfully dressed visitors headed off through the tall trees on the Blue Trail. With the group was Martin Hollay, a local, who worked on the trails from January 1959 until May of 1960. He gave a brief overview of what he did to help create the trails and then remove them after the Olympics. At the time, the land was all privately owned.

In the last week the new grooming equipment and snowmobile purchased to make state-of-the-art Nordic tracks had worked "wonderfully," according to volunteer Rob Weston who coordinated the purchase and training for drivers.

The back-to-life West Shore Association (WSA) purchased the equipment, which cost $14,000. WSA raised the money in a giant, sneak preview fundraiser at the West Shore Café last November. The entire XC effort has had steady and vital support from many local businesses as well as California State Parks and Brian Barton who is the Sugar Pine Point Park Superintendent.

Here is a Tahoetopia photo gallery of the kick-off, open-to-public, re-birth of Nordic trails on the West Shore.
