OUTDOORS: Plenty to Do

Take your pick:
• Skiing & Boarding. Check the Tahoetopia Webcams. There is great snow on the higher elevations. Ride up in comfort and carve your way down. Then do it again.

• Ice Skating. Squaw and Northstar have excellent rinks and ambiance. Glide and twirl to your heart's content.

• Walking & Hiking. At lower elevations the streets and most trails are relatively snow free. See your neighborhood and visit local creeks and the Truckee River at any one of a dozen places.

Don Fyfe from Alpenglow in Tahoe City says it is a good time to hike the Rubicon Trail between Emerald Bay and Bliss State Park, or walk along the bike trail between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows. "You could even hike a few miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail if you head north from the Fairway Center in Tahoe City." Trails along the East Shore, such as at Skunk Harbor, are also excellent bets right now. They will lead you down to quiet Lake Tahoe. Gaze at the empty, placid lake and you will feel like you have gone back 200 years in time.

• Cycling Road and mountain bikers alike can strap their bikes on the car and head to several A+ rides:
--There is a 30-mile bike trail that runs from Folsom to Downtown Sacramento.
--The Pioneer Trail on Highway 20 is located about 7 miles east of Nevada City.

John Svahn from Paco's Bike and Ski in Truckee recommends both the Emigrant Trail and Sawtooth Trail in Truckee for mountain bikers. They may be a bit muddy, but smile, you are riding on dirt in December!

• Snowshoeing. Get yourself up to 8,500' in Tahoe Meadows, which has snow. From there you can follow the route of the Tahoe Rim Trail on the non-snowmobile side of the meadow (south side). Trod on up to the ridgeline where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. If you still have energy after the out-of-doors time, go bowling in Incline or take a yoga class to relax and build strength and flexibility for your next activity time.
