Pain McShlonkey Classic Honors Skiing Legend in Rare Form

The Pain McShlonkey Classic, a wacky event originated by skiing legend Shane McConkey, took place in its founder's honor and in his style March 25-27 at Palisades Tahoe USA.

Tahoe TV was honored to be a sponsor and supporter of the event, and captured this extensive coverage as the weekend of wild times took place.

Combine Palisades Tahoe’s biggest season of snowfall on record, a rocking 80’s cover band, a Chinese Downhill and the world’s best winter athletes decked out in silly outfits and snowlerblades and you’ve got the recipe for the 2011 Pain McShlonkey Classic at Palisades Tahoe.

Held the weekend of March 25-27, festivities honored the life of Palisades Tahoe local and skiing legend Shane McConkey with wacky on-mountain events and sold-out parties.

Due to extreme snowfall and winds of 100-plus MPH, Saturday’s Snowlerblade Chinese Downhill and Extreme Small Mountain Snowlerblade Invitational were postponed until Sunday. The weather, however, didn’t stop 80’s cover band Tainted Love from playing to a sell-out crowd at Squaw’s Bar One.

Sunday ‘s weather lifted (a smidge) to kick off the Small Mountain Invitational where an impressive line-up of pros including Daron Rahlves, Brant Moles, JT Holmes and Colby West dressed to impress and prepared for the extreme-ly hysterical snowlerblade throwdown.

Ski legend (and mother of two) Wendy Fischer went big in bright fuchsia to take home the Small Mountain title while Michelle Parker and Suzanne Graham took their run tandem, to round out the women’s field in second and third.

On the men’s side, Jesse Hall claimed first place for his superman front flip and snowblade double daffy. The very dapper Cody Townsend took home second with a front flip, back flip, front flip followed by Chris Benchetler, with an impressive 360 degree third. Squawllywood author Robb Gaffney tied for fourth with his brother, Scott.

Freeskiing legend Pep Fujas, U.S. Ski Teamer Travis Ganong and High Fives Foundation founder Roy Tuscany judged the antics based on style, creativity and humor. In the spirit of McConkey, the goal of the weekend for both spectators and competitors was to have fun and laugh at yourself.

Athletes Steve Taves, Greg Lindsey and Tristen Queen took home top honors of “Best Dressed” during a hilarious fashion show held prior to the main event - the Snowlerblade Chinese Downhill.

After last chair on Squaw’s infamous KT-22, 30 pros and 30 of McConkey's fans rode to the top of KT-22 and lined up at the crest of the Women’s Downhill (named after 1960 Olympics) to compete for Golden Saucer victory.

After a mass start and extensive carnage, reminscent of the classic 'Chinese Downhill' in the 80's ski film Hot Dog: The Movie, Cody Townsend crossed the finish first and took home the coveted Golden Saucer and bragging rights to “fastest snowlerblader in the land.” Aaron McGovern came in a close second followed by Rob Gaffney in third.

Suzanne Graham claimed the ladies Golden Saucer, followed by Stacia Federowski and Michelle Parker.

This year’s inaugural event kicked off Friday night with the Shane McConkey Legacy Gala that raised more than $47,000 to benefit Protect Our Winters (POW) and the Shane McConkey Foundation. The organizations have joined forces to educate children about environmental causes and to bring sustainable energy into our schools.

The 2012 Pain McShlonkey Classic is slated for March 23-25. Details will be announced at www.shanemcconkey.org.
