Shane McConkey's Hilarious Event To Return to Palisades Tahoe USA

The Shane McConkey Foundation and Palisades Tahoe USA have announced the much-anticipated comeback of The Pain McShlonkey Classic, in honor of legendary skier Shane McConkey, at Palisades Tahoe USA on March 26, 2011.

This action packed on and off-mountain event will serve as a hilarious tribute to legendary skier Shane McConkey as pros and amateurs battle for the highly coveted Golden Saucer trophy and bragging rights.

Celebrated for his playful spirit, McConkey was the mastermind behind the original Pain McShlonkey Open that debuted in 2003. What began as a behind-the-scenes late-night race between competitors at the 1998 Winter X Games has evolved into a beloved event, attracting athletes from around the world.

Although the event was dubbed after one of Shane's funny alter egos, Pain McShlonkey, there's no questioning McConkey's true character.

"One thing about Shane is that what you saw is what he was: a man full of stoke, passion, ingenuity, humor and a zest for making your moments on this earth count," said longtime friend Scott Gaffney.  "As far as he was concerned, if you weren't laughing, playing, scaring yourself, competing against friends, making fun of each other or making fun of yourself, you were essentially wasting time.  The Pain McShlonkey Classic is a perfect amalgam of all of these elements that were so important to a guy who inspired us to no end."

Saturday's on-mountain antics promise excitement and entertainment for all as the world's top winter athletes hang up their precision-tuned skis and boards to compete in true McConkey style - on snow blades!

Festivities begin with the Extreme Small Mountain Snowlerblade Invitational where a select group of 30 pros will negotiate Palisades Tahoe's legendary terrain on K2 Fatty snow blades.   Cheer on the pros like Daron Rahlves, JT Holmes, Scott and Robb Gaffney and Jeremy Jones as they jockey for the podium.

Later, the pros will take on 30 amateurs during an anything-goes Snowlerblade Chinese Downhill. This all-out snowlerblade banzai will be a guaranteed crowd pleaser as a cast of celebrity judges adds to the hysterics. The 30 amateurs will be selected via an online contest and lottery process. If selected, the registration fee is $1.

The day will end with a rockin' after party at Palisades Tahoe's newly remodeled Bar One.  Tickets are $25 and guests must be 21 or older to attend. Valid ID is required. Proceeds will benefit Protect Our Winters (www.protectourwinters.org) and the Shane McConkey Foundation.

Spectators are encouraged to dress up and celebrate the spirit of McConkey.  "The best way to keep Shane's legacy alive is to remember to laugh at yourself and live life to the fullest," says Sherry McConkey. "We hope everyone comes out to make the whole weekend tastefully outrageous and fun."
