Lake Tahoe Resort News: Game On!

Resorts around Lake Tahoe, one of the world's most renowned winter destinations, are in full swing for the February holiday weekend after a recent storm left several feet of new snow. Resorts have significantly expanded operations and terrain, and will host a variety of special events to add to the excitement during the popular upcoming ski week.

Tahoe TV culled together this summary round-up of what's happening at Lake Tahoe's numerous resorts...

North Lake Tahoe
North Lake Tahoe ski resorts report totals nearing six feet of powder after the recent four-day snow storm. The storm let up Monday morning allowing for even more terrain expansions leading up to the 3-day President’s Day Weekend.

North Lake Tahoe, home to eight major downhill resorts, now offers 285 open trails to skiers and riders; a jump of over 120 trails from before the storm. The number of runs continue to increase as grooming efforts remain constant at each of the resorts.

Weather reports indicate skiers and riders will enjoy partly cloudy and a chance of snow during the 3-day holiday weekend, which includes Valentine’s Day and President’s Day.

Conditions are expansive for beginners looking to learn with adequate time left in the season to progress to intermediate trails. Ample intermediate and advanced terrain is also available throughout the region, offering diverse options for skiers and riders.

Palisades Tahoe & Alpine Meadows
[Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, Calif.] February 11, 2014 – Thanks to the five and a half feet of new snow that the resorts received this past weekend, Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows are opening new terrain for Presidents’ Weekend including some of the most coveted terrain on the mountains.

Palisades Tahoe opened Siberia chairlift Tuesday as well as Solitude chairlift for the first time this season. The resort is slated to open Granite Chief on Wednesday morning, as well as KT-22 and Headwall Express by this Saturday. Alpine Meadows is opening Scott chair for the first time this season on Wednesday and Lake View for Friday.

The two resorts will have over 90 percent of their terrain open for Presidents’ Weekend, offering the most terrain and most variety in Lake Tahoe. Thanks to the new snow, both Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows now offer acclaimed big mountain terrain, wide-open groomers and gentle beginner slopes. Palisades Tahoe also recently opened their mountaintop beginner area, meaning that first time skiers and rides can make their first turns on easy, green runs while enjoying incredible views of Lake Tahoe and the High Sierra. By Saturday, the resorts will be running a total of 32 lifts, including 20 lifts and over 60 runs at Palisades Tahoe, and 12 lifts and over 45 runs at Alpine Meadows.

In addition to exception natural terrain, Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows are also ramping up their terrain park offerings for the upcoming weekend. Palisades Tahoe is slated to offer 27 features including seven small to medium jumps by Saturday in the Gold Coast Park. Just a quick, free shuttle ride away, Alpine Meadows is planning to have 16 terrain park features, including three small jumps in Tiegel Park by Saturday.

Homewood Mountain Resort
Homewood Mountain Resort is pleased to announce that, with the addition of 5+ feet of fresh snow dropped by recent winter storms, the resort has geared up for full operations by the holiday weekend.

On Tuesday, the resort added the Ellis chairlift to the schedule, joining the Old Homewood Express and Madden Triple chairs, as well as the Happy Platter and Magic Carpet surface lifts. By Thursday, the resort plans to open the Quail chairlift as well as the South Base Children’s Center and Children’s Ski & Snowboard School, meaning the resort will be fully operational in time for President’s Day weekend and the Ski/Skate Week school vacations.

“We are very excited to be able to open the terrain accessible via the Ellis chair today,” said Homewood General Manager Kevin Mitchell. “Our mountain operations crews have been digging out and getting everything ready as fast as they possibly can after the five feet of new snow we received this past week, and we’re going to have essentially the entire mountain open and ready for the busy weekend we have ahead.”

New terrain accessible today off the Ellis chair includes Homewood’s legendary gladed tree runs off Hidden Vein and in Hobbit Land, as well as groomers down The Glades, Second Creek and Rainbow Ridge.

New runs that will be available off the Quail chair on Thursday include El Capitan, Martin’s Lane Overload, Prospector, Spillway and more. And by Friday, Homewood is scheduled to open the Kolby’s Escape slopestyle and boarder-cross courses for terrain park riders.

South Lake Tahoe - Heavenly, Kirkwood, Sierra-at-Tahoe
Tahoe South struck it rich this weekend with 4-7 feet of new snow and Jamie Anderson’s Olympic gold medal in women’s slopestyle. The forecast at America's Best Ski Destination (USA Today, Jan. 2014) calls for a chance of snow through Friday with sunny skies and dry roads this weekend.

“With Jamie’s accomplishment and the new snow, the vibe embodies what our mountain community is all about,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “All of South Lake Tahoe is proud of our team of local athletes and are hopeful for more podium finishes.”

The recent storms allow for more powder-filled conditions and access to additional terrain for Valentine's Day, President's Day weekend, and beyond. What's new and what's ahead:
Sierra-at-Tahoe, home mountain for Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson, has opened West Bowl and continues to build on the base with more than 75 percent of the mountain open. Skiers and boarders are advised to stay on the marked trails.

Sweets on the Slopes will feature tastings from three El Dorado County wineries Boeger Winery, Madrona Vineyards and Lava Cap on Feb. 14. The California Repercussions (a.k.a. the Reapers) are a 45-70 piece band who will perform while skiing down the slopes off of Broadway run. The group will play rock-n-roll, pop, and jazz, and even some traditional band music. Ike and Martin will perform at the Plaza Deck Sunday, Feb. 16

Gnu Lil' Weirdos a snowboarding event for children 13 and under is March 16. The Tanner Hall Invitational, a rider-judged, invite-only event, returns for its second year March 29. Tanner Hall is an accomplished freeskier who’s instrumental in the birth/growth of the sport.

Last week's storms at Heavenly Mountain Resort prepared for opening the popular Milky Way Bowl. Heavenly has 57 of 97 runs open, which is more than 30 miles of terrain.

Keeping with the festive spirit, skiers and boarders will see the Heavenly DJ Cat roving up and down the mountain. The mobile grooming machine is retrofitted on a DJ platform with high quality sound and light show that rivals a nightclub. Unbuckle at Tamarack Lodge, helps usher in the snow spirit with half-priced drinks, dancing and special guest DJs daily from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Unbuckle has expanded to feature the Heavenly Angels exclusively on Thursdays through Sundays and is taking the party out onto the patio at Tamarack Lodge.

With the recent snowfall Kirkwood Mountain Resort has opened additional lifts and runs offering a total of 40 trails accessing 700 acres of open terrain. Timber Creek is now open seven days a week with daily lessons available through the Kirkwood Ski and Ride School. More advanced ski and snowboard camps and clinics are available through Expedition: Kirkwood, located across from Cornice Express lift.

The Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, returns to Kirkwood Feb. 22-23 with ski and snowboard competition. The following weekend is the fourth stopover of the Swatch Freeride World Tour Feb. 28 through March 1.
